Gerüche entstehen, wenn feste und flüssige Hinterlassenschaften sich vermischen. Indem die Ausscheidungen getrennt und die Feststoffe danach getrocknet werden, lassen sich unerwünschte Gerüche minimieren.

Der Trenneinsatz der Toilette sorgt dafür, dass feste und flüssige Hinterlassenschaften voneinander getrennt werden und in zwei separaten Behältern landen. Diese können unabhängig voneinander entleert werden.

Als Streu eignet sich: Sägespäne, Kleintierstreu, Terra Preta, Kokosziegel, Streu mit Aktivkohle, Erde, Kaffeesatz.

Urin kann leicht über das normale Abwassersystem entsorgt oder verdünnt als Dünger verwendet werden. Feste Abfälle gehören in die Restmülltonne, eine Kompostierung ist unter Umständen möglich.

Die Reinigung einer Trockentrenntoilette ist einfach und kann effektiv mit milden Hausmitteln wie verdünnter Zitronen- oder Essigsäure durchgeführt werden. PH-neutrale Reiniger oder solche mit Effektiven Mikroorganismen sind ebenfalls geeignet. Aggressive Chemikalien und scheuernde Werkzeuge sollten vermieden werden, da sie das Material beschädigen können.
