How the Level Indicator for Composting Toilets Works

Using a floating mechanism, the Trelino® Urinometer measures the fill level of your canister. As the liquid rises, the float moves upwards, pushing an orange plastic signal pin through the urine funnel of the separating insert. Once the canister reaches a critical level, the orange signal pin becomes clearly visible.

The Urinometer level indicator requires no batteries, making it highly reliable and ensuring maximum independence. A quick lift of the toilet lid is enough to check if it’s time to empty the canister – no need for a torch or an external display outside the van, as required by alternative products.
Bonus feature: The level indicator is inserted through the membrane of the urine canister lid. This not only ensures a secure fit but also prevents the membrane from shifting – a simple yet effective solution!

Overflow control made easy: when the canister is 85–90 % full, the level indicator clearly shows that it is time to empty it. At lower fill levels, the indicator remains down and you can continue to use your Trelino with complete peace of mind.

The level indicator for composting toilets is available in two sizes:

XS | S:

• For urine canisters with a volume of less than 5 liters (all Trelino® XS and Trelino® S - but doesn't fit in Origin S)
• Assembled Urinometer: (W/D/H) 5.4/ 5.4/ 12.0 cm
• Pin only: (H) 10.0 cm

M | L:

• For urine canisters with a volume of 5 liters or more (all Trelino® M and Trelino® L)
• Assembled Urinometer: (W/D/H) 5.4/ 5.4/ 14.5 cm
• Signal Pin only: (H) 12.5 cm

**Positioning note: For Timber and Origin models, make sure to place the canister centrally under the urine funnel. This will prevent the indicator's signal pin from becoming stuck. If it does get stuck, gently tap the walls of the toilet from the outside. This will cause the urine in the canister to move and the signal pin will move freely again.

1. Unscrew the lid of the urine canister.
2. Remove the membrane from the lid.
3. Carefully insert the Trelino® Urinometer level indicator through the membrane.
4. Check that the indicator is correctly positioned. The two small indentations on the round base of the Urinometer should align with the two markings on the membrane. If they match, everything is in place!
5. Screw the lid with the membrane and Urinometer back onto the canister, place the separating insert into the toilet – and you're all set! :)

1. How does the level indicator work?
   Our level indicator operates mechanically, without electricity or batteries, making it perfect for independent use on the go. Inside the urine canister, there is a float that pushes a small signal pin upwards as the fill level increases. When this pin is visible upon opening the toilet lid in the separation unit, it’s a clear sign: It’s time to empty the canister.

   
   

2. Which Trelino® models is the level indicator compatible with?
   Our Urinometer has been specifically developed for the Evo series. If you have a different toilet and would like to use a Urinometer, feel free to send a short message to our customer support at hello@trelino.com.

   
   

3. In which sizes is the level indicator available?
   The Urinometer is available in two sizes. The short version fits the Trelino® Evo S, while the long version is compatible with the Evo models M and L. When ordering, simply select the size of your Evo model, and we will send you the appropriate version of the Urinometer.

   
   

4. Can I retrofit the level indicator if I already have a Trelino® Evo?
   Yes, you can use the Urinometer with your existing Evo. The level indicator is easily inserted into the lid of the urine canister. The installation is very straightforward and takes only a minute. No complicated fiddling, no drilling or sawing into the body. On our website, you’ll find an informative video that shows you how to install it in detail.

   
   

5. Does the level indicator require electricity or batteries?
   No, the indicator works 100% mechanically, without any power source – making it completely independent. You’re fully free from batteries or chargers, making it perfect for your next off-grid adventure.

   
   

6. How do I install the level indicator?
   The installation is very simple: First, push the level indicator through the membrane and then insert both the membrane and the Urinometer into the lid of the urine canister. Done! A detailed guide is included in the packaging or can be found on our website.

   
   

7. Is the level indicator also compatible with other urine canisters?
   Yes, our Urinometer is not limited to Trelino® urine canisters. It can also be used with other compatible canisters. If you own a separation toilet from another manufacturer, feel free to send us an email. 8. How do I clean the level indicator?
   We recommend using our premium cleaner, Holy Shine, or another pH-neutral cleaner for cleaning the Urinometer. You can also use diluted vinegar just like with your separation toilet. With the Urinometer, please avoid using aggressive cleaning agents!

   
   

9. What is included in the delivery of the Trelino® Urinometer?
   You will receive a pre-assembled Urinometer consisting of a holder and a signal pin. Additionally, a silicone membrane for the urine canister is included. The entire set is packaged in a stylish box made from recycled paper.

   
   

10. Does the Urinometer affect the flow rate into the urine tank?
    The Urinometer has been specially designed for use in the urine canister. A smooth flow into your urine canister is still guaranteed. The ring-shaped design of the Urinometer fits perfectly into the lid of the canister and the shape of the holder is specifically tailored to our silicone membrane, so you don’t have to compromise on functionality.

    
    

11. Can I use the level indicator during my period?
    No worries – you can use the level indicator during your period. The indicator measures the fill level of your canister regardless of whether menstrual fluid is present in the urine. It works reliably even during your period.

    
    

12. How often should I clean the level indicator?
    We recommend cleaning the Urinometer, just like the urine canister, regularly every 2-3 days. About once every two weeks (or before you store your Trelino® for a break), a more thorough cleaning with diluted vinegar or citric acid is recommended. This way, everything stays hygienic, fresh, and always ready for use!

    
    

13. Can I use the level indicator without a membrane or with a different membrane than the one from Trelino®?
    No, the Urinometer has been designed to work optimally with the Trelino® membrane. Using it without a membrane or with another type of membrane may impair its functionality.

    
    

14. What should I do if there is a smell?
