The urine flows into the membrane cap. The resulting pressure causes it to open and then close. This means that urine can always flow in from above, but liquid cannot slosh back from below. Odors can also be reduced.

An air outlet is necessary to ensure that the urine flows out and to prevent any adhesions, therefore the membrane lip does not close completely.
